Sister Missionary

Durban does not have any Sister Missionaries.  This sister lives in Ezekeni which is in the Newscastle District. It's part of our mission.  A District is like a baby Stake (similar to a Branch vs a Ward). She leaves for the MTC early in the morning, but she came to Durban to get set apart as a missionary to serve in Uganda. This may be the only time we get to have a Sister Missionary stay at the mission home.

I asked if her mom was sad that she was going. She said, "no she is very happy and told me she didn't want to hear from me in 18 months time."  Her mom is more than thrilled her daughter is serving a mission, but wants her daughter to focus all her time to sharing the gospel without being distracted by thinking of home! The members here are so faithful!

  1. Curious as to why no Sisters in the mission? And is this Sister Thompson doing this blog? It's awesome, thank you!

  2. Yes, this is Sister Thompson. There are no sister missionaries due to safety concerns (though it is my belief Durban is safer than Johannesburg or Capetown). Thanks for your question! I'm glad you like the blog.

  3. Sister Thompson, I just found your blog randomly I'm a former SADM missionary 2002-2004 under the Roberts and then 10 days with the Brocks. My family friends the Manns where Mission Presidents there, my family owned a condo there for ages, and now I live in Utah away from my motherland Africa. Now my friends son is serving under you both, elder Legas. So the SADM has a special place in my heart. Coincidentally, my companion and I were the first missionaries to open up Ezekeni, we first met on Sundays in two rooms at a school. Brought a tear to my eye after reading that they sent out a sister missionary!

  4. I'm so happy to hear from you! You might be pleased to know that there are currently six missionaries from Ezekeni serving right now, and in a few months the branch will have a total of 14 from the branch (both Sisters and Elders)who will be serving a full-time mission. They are an amazing branch and people! If you scroll through some of the earlier posts on this blog there are photos of the Ezekeni Chapel (in July, I think)- it's beautiful! I'm so glad you commented!

  7. I just wrote a comment and realized that I didn't finish so I started again. Thank you so much for posting. I was just looking at some pictures of Elder King and decided to see if there was any news from the Durban, South Africa Mission. What a wonderful surprise. Here was one of our sweet sister missionaries. Nozibusiso Shabalala was so dear to us. We loved teaching her and being with her and her mother. Thank you for taking care of her. There are three sister missionaries out from the New Castle District and you will be blessed to see them come home. They are so amazing. Nozibusiso was the first sister to leave from Ezakheni along with the "Elders of Ezakheni" we called them. Elder Daki, Elder Manqele, Elder Mukulise, Elder Luvuno, Elder Kunene, Elder Dlamini, Elder Ndlovu, Elder Dube and 4 others are preparing. This is such an amazing little branch. We love this area of the mission. We left Durban on June 7, 2016. You will love this mission and they will love you and President Thompson. unkulunkulu anibusise, Sister Tamera Taylor from Pleasant Grove.

  9. This is Lisa Hicks, Elder Levi Hick's mom. I was looking for a blogspot by a member in Lesotho, Makamohelo. She mentioned she blogs about the missionaries. She has been trying to make contact with me through Facebook. Since I found your blog I thought I would take this opportunity to say thank you for your service there in Durbin. Mission presidents and their wives give up more than two years away from a son, you give up three years away from your entire family. So thank you for that and for teaching, praying over and ministering to my son among all those missionaries you are responsible for there is SA. It's an awesome task. Thank you both.

    1. Yes I know who you are talking about. I sent you a friend request on Facebook. If you accept it, then send me a private message under Facebook Messenger I can give it to you. Plus, you were on my list to contact! I spent time with your son on Saturday, and I thought I would give you an update at how wonderful he is!
